reduction/kiln

Hi all,

=20

There are numerous people talking about even reduction. Part of the =
issue may be your flue area is very large and the damper isn't closed =
enough. I suggest a small flue opening. Mine is 8"x5". The floor =
system is different also. My kiln is about 65 cubic feet. Wally Schwab =
has built kilns also and some of them have been larger and his flue =
opening is 9"x 2 =BD ". Sounds wrong. Look at his site, the pots are =
very strong, the glazes are exceptional.

Even with a smaller flue opening the kiln is dampered considerably.

If you would like to see this floor system or know more about the =
design, write and I'll send Pictures. =20

This makes for very even back pressure and will reduce your clay and =
glazes evenly without flashing if that is what you are after.

Hi Bill,

Chimney height is also a factor - the taller the chimney the more damper
you need to cut down draft. If you have a short chimney then you better
have a "big" flue opening.

Have I got that right?

Because kilns differ so much we should be careful about what we recommend -
some atmospheres have to be murky to get everything reduced properly. Much
depends on the overall kiln and burner design. If the gas and air is "pre
mixed" then the atmosphere can be quite clear. That may not be the case
with atmospheric burners - which are also affected by the current weather.
