On the way to and back from Tennessee last week,
I got the chance to stop and see a couple of
exceptional clay exhibits. The first is the one
of Toshiku Takaezu's works at the Green Hill
Center for North Carolina Art in Greensboro:

The second was Ben Owen III's works at Blue
Spiral in Asheville:

Both of these shows go through August 25. They
are well worth going to. The Blue Spiral website
has most of Ben's works online, but of course
the photos don't really convey the sense of the
pots fully.

I was also fortunate to be in Asheville the
weekend of the 35th Annual Village Arts and
Crafts Fair on the grounds of the Cathedral of
All Souls in Biltmore Village. Although it was
a very hot day, people seemed to be buying
pretty well. Overall, I was disappointed in
the quality of the clay artists there, but I
did enjoy the works of a couple and bought a
teabowl from a South Carolina potter. The pots
in some of the downtown galleries were also
disappointing with the exception of Blue Spiral
and Ariel and New Morning Gallery.

And I finally found my way to Highwater Clays
in Asheville. It's like a being a kid in a
candy shop to see all the things there. But I
managed to contain myself and only buy a few
things that I needed.
