I dug back into my files and found Nils' reply to my questions about slurry
thickness and tightening. This way it's In The archives

hi Tom, heard youi had a fire. Hope not too destructive. On the torque I've
found that I tighten by feel rather than a certain in/lb pressure. Bottom
rod tightened to lift the side, then top rod to bring it down. If bricks
staart to crunch --too tight!
As for breaking bricks I think less is better. Use a thin mixture, just
enough to grip, but not so much thye bricks arch much. Hope this helps, nils
