early teapots

in my reading on porcelain, it indicates that the chinese
often copied european tea sets and sent them back
in the trade system. (sort of like toys today.)

the fancy, large british, german and french teapots were not used
by the chinese. so, it seems that the classic teapot that we know
and use, is european in design. (the brown betty.)

the almost insane need for fancy porcelain is well documented.

others may have better information.
such as:
how old is the e/shing teapot tradition?

I had a friend check the internet in Chinese just now and they reported tha=
t YiXing teapots originated in the Song Dynasty ( 907-1297 AD ) and were at=
their current shape/size at least during the Qing Dynasty. I don't know if=
that helps the discussion, but I hope so.

Ric, I understand the old YiXing pots were used for infusing
medicinal herbs. Can you ask friends about that?

When you look at old Japanese pots, the only pots that
look like tea pots are actually used for rice wine. It wasn't
actually until european export that they started making actual tea
pots.

Dear Lee Love ,

You say << I understand the old YiXing pots were used for infusing =
medicinal herbs. >>

... And there was I, thinking that Tea was a medicinal herb....

Enjoy your travels.

One of many. But before Europeans, green tea was brewed
or whisked in bowls and not in pots like medicine.

I confess that I don't drink much tea...but as an observer...in China today=
...
=20
The common daily usage now-a-days ...and one might guess that it may have b=
een the case for a very long time...green tea is commonly steeped by droppi=
ng tea leaves into the cup/bottle of hot water, wait a while then start to =
sip. Most of the tea leaves sink to the bottom of the cup.....some are str=
ained out by teeth or tea bottles have a small strainer inside for this pur=
pose.
=20
The 'tea ceremony' (4 PM.High Tea, Cha No Yu, Cha Dao....) is a different c=
at...so to speak. More formal use of ewer/teapot/vessel to brew the tea. =
There are of course all sorts of wisks and ways of heating the water and wa=
ys of pouring the tea. It seems logical that a ewer for serving wine a few =
thousand years ago in China, during the Shang Dynasty...or before... could =
morph into the teapot that we know and love today in so many shapes and siz=
es and designs.
=20
It would make a good book. but then...Maybe someone already wrote it?=20
=20
Any one?
