Myrna,
It was the late Vivika Heino who gave us the lavender oil idea. Us
guys were suggesting all sorts of noxious remedies (like bleach) and
then she suggested Lavender Oil. I feel fortunate having been able
to meet her.
You can read about her here:

Hi gang,
I use the Axner Max's Paperclay and Sybil's Paperclay as my primary clay
bodies. As you can imagine living in Florida after a few days the smell
of the paperclay in the bag can be strong, outright gross to some. I have
found the oils from The Body Shop and Yankee Candle work well to mask the
smell. I usually put 10 eye dropper drips close the bag or sometimes wedge
it into the clay I am about to use.
Hope this helps.

At NCECA glaze workshop with Pinnell and Vivika, she told us she uses

I do not know what kind of paper is used in commercially produced paper
clay bodies but I have found that cotton linter from twinrocker paper
supply smells less. I usually get a window of about 1 month before the
clay that I make starts to smell. That's plenty of time to use it up.
I just make it one 5 gallon batch at a time. Newspaper and toilet paper
seem to decay quicker and stink much sooner.
