I really believe that Peter Pugger is the best, most versatile machine out there. I read about pug mills for months before deciding- I have one in my high school ceramics dept. and one at the middle school. Most schools can't afford one but we have a really successful fund-raising system.

Peter handles re-claim and mixing clay from scratch equally well. You can just toss your throwing left-overs in, or soften a bunch of slightly hard clay. The hopper is large enough so that loading it up goes quickly. I have de-airing machines- it's nice to be able to leave clay sit in the machine indefinitely- because of the sealed lid. I also bought extruding dies for Peter- but haven't used them too much yet.

It seems that most machines are not both a pug mill and a clay mixer - this one definitely is. I think there a few new machines out there that look very similar- but these guys have been around the longest. They have a patent on vacuum sealing the entire chamber- or something like that!

The machines are made in Calif.- I am in Wis. but the staff is really friendly and helpful on the phone. They helped me through the first batches- when I just wasn't putting enough clay in it, it started sliming around, etc. I guess this is a pretty good commercial for the Peter Pugger folks!!

We are a three person ceramic studio making custom ceramic tile
murals. We are exploring buying a pugmill to recycle scrap clay. It
is a bit overwhelming trying to make a decision about something this
expensive when we haven't used one. Any advice about brands,
reliability, which features are really important - ie. de-airing or
not? .

Also, any advice about buying new versus used? Does anyone have
experience with customer service issues, warranty and reliability?

thanks,

Karen
