It is now time to put the chimney on my 40ft MFT kiln. I plan to use the =
spiral pipe with the fiber flue liners. I am also using the double =
venturie type exit flu as described in Nils Lou's book. I have 3 sets of =
plans and each one has a different chimney height 12ft to 16ft.
Is there a way to figure how high the chimney should be to work =
properly. Or is there some kind of formula to use to figure the correct =
height???
Does anyone know the best and or the cheapest place to order the fiber =
flu liners??? Is one brand better than another???
I also removed the top of my kiln, scraped all the slip off the bricks =
and reinstalled with only a thin layer of slip. The kiln looks much =
better inside now. Thanks to all who responded with help.

Gene,
If you are firing with propane, you do not need a 12 or 16 ft chimney. I have a 50 cu/ft sprung arc downdraft and my chimney is just above the arch. From there, there is a 6 inch gap and then my exhaust duct to take the heat out through the roof of the studio. I fire with 4 eclipse burners at 4.5 pounds of pressure. The pressure creates a forced draft so the chimney does not need to be so high. I know it is not what Fred says about chimney height, but it works great for me. The chimney is 9x9 inside and I fire with it open 4 inches, closed to 2 1/2 for reduction.
good luck,
