japanese inlaid plate set on ebay

It's used to attract buyers that may be searching for pieces by Hamada. I am
surprised the seller didn't also include Eames and Leach in the description.
That would be normal for buyers searching for mid-century craft pieces.

I take it to mean he apprenticed under Hamada.
Lee will probably know for sure.

Here is a beautiful and very interesting set of inlaid plates
on eBay by Tatsuzo Shimaoka.

Makes me want to carve some clay.

Why not ask the seller? eBay provides a way to do that via email.

The lovely plates are listed under this heading:

"Zogan Inlaid Plate by Tatsuzo Shimaoka (Shoji Hamada)"

What do you think is meant by the addition of Hamada's name?

Shimaoka is Hamada's most sucessful apprentice. I am
guessing 10 X more folks know Hamada than SHimaoka, so it shows up in
more searches on Ebay.

These are mostly rope impressed and stamp impressed. The only carved
aspects are the inlayed leaves.

Gay, I think Tatsuzo Shimoaka was Hamada's most favoured apprentice. Perhaps
this was made during his time there, or maybe it was simply endorsed by
Hamada as being good stuff as Hamada was a living National treasure. A
friend of mine, Bob Connery, makes beautiful reduced lustre work and whilst
in his second residency in Japan his work was shown to a particular tea
master who endorsed his work by signing the lid of the box of a few of the
pieces. Allegedly that puts the value way up to get this mark of approval.
I do not know enough of the Japanese culture to hypothesize any further.

Sometimes sellers on ebay add other information to the heading and
description in order that their items come up on more searches. Thus this
item would come up for someone searching for Hamada even if they didn't have
Shimaoka in their search criterion.
