canada-usa border perils

I got a Artista wheel three months ago, ordered from a USA
distributer because there aren't any Canadian ones that carry it,
and there doesn't seem to be any Canadian firm making pottery
wheels either. Clay King knows all about the abusive UPS/FedEx
brokerage charges and sent it USPS - it arrived fine.

It's now failed - runs only at full speed - naturally at the
beginning of a long weekend I'd hoped to get some throwing done
for a new set of dishes :-(

Creative Industries' warranty is ONLY at the factory in the USA.
And, they refuse to use USPS. So, I have to fill out yards of
paperwork for our customs to avoid being recharged 15% sales
taxes when it is returned, then pay $80 shipping (double what it
would be within the USA) plus two $30 brokerage fees - $140.

I'm lucky in one respect, as an electrical engineer I'll be able
to fix it myself if Creative will agree to supply the small
electronic part that's failed. But, that border sure is rough on
any Canadian who wants to do pottery...
