You know, this thread brought something to mind that I've thought of time and again. I would LOVE to attend a class on kiln maintenance and repair....just a thought. Sher Morrow

I would love to attend one as well. I have been speaking with some of
the people at the Bray about that,, still waiting to hear back from
them about it.

At 2006 NCECA in Portland, Oregon, I believe it was Arnold Howard
from Paragon who sat with
us in the Clayart room and presented such information to those who
wanted to know. In addition,
he discussed in detail the
answers to all our questions. Patient, thoughtful and interesting. Great guy.

If it was not you, Arnold, but another Great Guy...... and if it
wasn't Paragon...... please forgive
me. The point, however, is made in response to Sher's statement.

I know we'll have (as always) a couple weeks yet between now and
November with hot
desert weather, including wind. For now, it's wonderful.

We teach a seminar on kiln maintenance usually twice a year
in Mesquite, Texas. The next one is October 5 - 6. It is
already filled, but I will send a notice to Clayart for the
next one.

Some people attend the seminar repeatedly, because they
learn something new every time.

Sincerely,

Arnold Howard

He did it in Baltimore, as well. I'm thinking maybe a more in-depth =
session might be in order for those who want it, and if he can arrange =
it.

BUT - y'all should CALL Paragon and find out when their kiln =
maintenance/repair classes are - they do have them periodically at the =
facility in Texas.

Yes, I spoke in the Clayart room. Thanks, Joyce.

Last year I brought a kiln collar so that people could test
an element with an ohmmeter. I can bring it again next year
if anyone is interested.

Arnold:
Am I dreaming (a distinct possibility these days) or did you not host a
breakout session at NCECA Louisville for kiln maintenance as well?
I thought I remember attending that....or was it Portland...or...?

This summer I learned to use an ohm meter, what my elements should read, how
to change a thermocouple, but that was after many calls to the manufacturer
of the kiln, the computer company and an electrician who thought I was nuts.

(I learned, for instance, that when you read the Ohm meter for the elements
you don't go a couple inches the whole way around the element to get a
reading??? Boy, was I sheepish! The lady at the kiln company was trying
not to laugh, I just know it.)

I would love to have a class where I could be shown how it should be done
right, safety issues, how NOT to destroy my kiln, change elements, fix
bricks, repair a lid, stuff that comes up for all of us, but I have somehow
escaped these tasks through the years. I have no idea how. I'd rather feel
comfortable ahead of time instead of doing the panic hunt for numbers and
parts.
Texas is unfortunatly too far for me, although it Is right up the alley for many clayarters....lucky you. I love Texas btw. I will watch for announcements for classes that might pop up here in the northcentral area of the us. I have learned a lot from those who had questions before, Sher

Well, I'll be on the watch for it. If anyone knows of a class like that =
in the Michigan, Ohio, Indiana or lllinois area, would you please post? =
THanks to all, Sher who had to change a thermocouple this summer and had =
nightmares for a week.
