clay and majolica

Judy,
This is the way I would look it.
Clay vitrifies, becomes stone -like, very hard for water to seep through at the temperature it says it matures at; ie, cone 1, 3, 6. even over 10. If I fire and glaze the clay object( ^ 6) below the temp it says , then it's a good chance that, it could weep. What do you think?

Do I need to use a different clay for the majolica pots or can I still
use the cone 6 clay? Any help would be appreciated.

It depends. Majolica is really fun stuff and if I want something usable
(meaning use with food), I use my ^04 clay. Can't back this up with any
sort of scientific explanation, but I have it in my head that low fire
glaze on a high fire body isn't going to give the kind of glaze/clay
fit that using the same ^ glaze and clay will give.

But.... one semester I decided I was going to use ^10 clay and ^04
underglazes. I like the intense colors of low fire and I was convinced
I could get the colors on high fire clay. So.... I made my pieces,
bisque fired them, then fired them to ^10. Then, I used the underglazes
along with a clear glaze. I had carved some pine trees into the side of
the pot, an I used the underglazes on the trees. Then I put a clear
glaze over the underglaze and fired to ^05. I had interesting results.
The color of the naked clay changed in the low fire to an earthy yellow
(much nicer than it sounds) an I got almost intense colors on the
trees.

Hi Judy,

Why not do it all at cone 6 - you will have a body that shouldn't leak and
the same kind of colour response. There is a cone 6 majolica glaze in our
book for instance - one of the best I hear.

If you must - a cone 6 clay will do - almost the same amount of leaking as
most cone 04 bodies. Perhaps you should ask on ClayArt if there are any
cone 04 clays that will be tight enough to not leak at 04.

Hi Ron,

I bought and read your book last December. I wanted to get an
understanding of how glazes work. I have never mixed my own glazes. I
guess this would be a good time to start. I plan to use Mason stains to
color the glaze. What percentage stain do you suggest?

Thanks,
Judy Smith
