I am working with a group of teenagers making bowls for an Empty Bowl
project. We are going to work with Cone 10 bmix but we will fire the work in an
electric kiln to cone 6. I would really appreciate any suggestions that anyone
has about glazes that will fit this claybody. We can either mix the glazes
ourselves are buy commercial glazes. Thanks so much. Ann Currie

One more thing - Chappelle says Floating Blue is cone 6. For me it works
best at cone 5. At cone 6 it tends to go green and run.

Try a look at this site. Mastering Cone 6 glazes are recommended for this
clay body. If you go to
http://www.frogpondpottery.com/glazestability/glaze0005.html
you can use the base glaze with different oxides. I have yet to hear of
anyone having a problem with fit for any of the MC6 glazes on cone 6
bodies. The studio I was at used a very wide range of clays and had no
problems with MC6 glazes. Other options that you can find on John
Hesselberth's site under stability that people use on a variety of clays
is the floating blue, and Annie's Tan (only without the Rutile and
Manganese for a rich earthy red brown).
Read Jason Hooper's posts this week.
I don't use bmix but I can send you other glazes that should work if these
are not enough.

Ann,
Bmix comes in cone 5 and cone 10 versions. For electric at cone 6 you
would be better off if you can get the cone 5 version. It will handle
cone 6 easily.
As for glazes - Chapelles Floating Blue and Chrome-Tin Red work well on
Cone 5 Bmix. Both can be found in the archives at www.potters.org. It
would be good to look for them there because there is considerable
discussion about them not found elsewhere. Also, Zakin's Black Friday
works well. on ^5 Bmix.

Why aren't you using Cone 6 b-mix? You're pretty much guarenteeing that the
finished pieces will chip with use.

I recommend Mastering Cone 6 Glazes (http://www.masteringglazes.com/). Your
students can read the book and learn about glaze formulation, too.

OOPS! Didn't realize that Bmix came in both cone5 and 10 - Those glazes I
mentioned are very tolerant but I would beware of using a high fire clay
for a mid fire piece especially if it is functional. I just assumed that
this clay had a range of 5-10 (which I have always been uneasy of and will
not buy but they do sell clays with that range).
My bad. (the problem with not knowing what you don't know).

Hi Ann,
Why use a cone 10 clay at cone 6? Do you not care that the ware will leak
and absorb water? That will make them unfit for use in microwave ovens.
Water absorption will result in delayed crazing as well.

Hi Ann,
I agree with John's comment below. While my experience with Cone 5 B
Mix is limited to a couple boxes, I have talked with others who have
used it and had the same experience as I had. I found that Cone 5 B
mix was not fully vitrified (leak-proof without glaze) until about
cone 7. I have to believe that the Cone 10 B mix would be pretty
porous at cone 6. You would be totally dependent on a perfect craze-
free glaze to achieve leak-proofness. .

John
