Ok wait, A bit more info here pls. So you mix a slip using magic
water as all the water, or just add a dab to the slip? Then for the
high rag paper towel -- after soaking in magic water do you take it
off before appling slip? I am assuming yes, but ... This dry to dry
method answers may questions and resolved many problems... Thanks!@

John,
I do this all this time - dry to dry. First I make up some moderately
stiff slip, and use "magic water" in the mix. I put a piece of high rag
paper towel over the spot where the pieces attach. Then I soak the paper
in "Magic Water". after the contact surfaces are fully wetted, I apply a
bit of slip to the contact surfaces, the push together. It works most
every time. It even works on non-similar clays, like attaching B-mix
pottery clay to B-mix casting slip.

Nancy,
Remove the piece of high rag towel just before you apply the slip. The
underlying cly should be good and wet by then with the magic water, and
the fresh slip will have a surface that it can get a grip upon, one that
will become uniform to some depth within the clay. Quickly press both
surfaces together and aply a little pressure. Some slip shouild be
exuded around the edges. Allow to dry just a bit before cleaning the
exuded clay clip. Sometimes, I will use a bit of paper clay instead of
just the plain slip. The paper fiber tends to hold things in place until
the bisque firing is completed, at which times you can then glaze safely
without fear of something falling off. After firing the clay and glaze
to maturity, there is little chance anything will ever break at that
seam. unless it is struck with something sufficiently to break ceramic
materials.
I use "rags in a box" paper towels in my shop, and therefore have them
handy for the attachment process. Rags-in-a-box are available at Lowes
stores, Home Depot, and others.
