This workshop will focus on methods of creating life scale figures in
clay. Students will experience a variety of mold-making processes
including working with alginate castings, plaster life-casts, and rubber
press-molds. Life casting methods for creating plaster molds and models
of the human head and hands will be taught. A survey of visual images
showing how artists use the human figure as a narrative vehicle will be
presented. Historical approaches will be blended with contemporary genre
i.e. the doll, the mannequin, figurine and statuary will be explored.
Installation- oriented figure sculpture and figures in context will be
discussed.

Nationally acclaimed figure sculptor Nan Smith is a Professor at the
University of Florida where she teaches Ceramics. Her life scale figures
and installations have been exhibited in over 100 exhibitions. She has
been the recipient of numerous grants including a National Endowment for
the Arts regional award for sculpture. Her work has been published in
numerous books and magazines. For more information on the artist and
