Reading down in the digest I see you have gotten the formula from
others. Sorry for the repeat.
Keep in mind on the other stuff -- water temp, plaster temp, angle of
mixer, etc, that those directions are for making a flawless surface
-- say for example for a toilet -- Koler -- or for one of Notkin's
teapots, etc. They are also concerned with making the perfect mold
for slip casting absorption and all of the issues they are telling
you matter for that purpose.
For your wedging table, you want to get it right, but don't stress
too much. The plaster will cure and you are mostly worried about a
flat surface on the top. Any imperfections on the underside will not
cause you issues and you don't need perfect absorption. You just
need plaster.
Before I knew anything (and still know little now) I used to just
dump plaster of paris from Home Depot into a bucket and add water
till it got thick. Then I would spray pam into an old pan and make a
paster block for drying clay. It worked just fine. So there is some
middle ground between that old method and the very technical USG -
Kholer -- Notkin directions for perfect plaster finish.
Go for it!
