In Pottery Making
Illustrated
Sept/Oct issue 2007 is an article about CONE 6
Crystals. In this article by William Schran a description is given for
making 3/4 inch thick biscuits out of equal parts by volume: alumina,
kaolin, and sawdust. My question is -should one bisque fire these
first? or just use them underfoot as a support. It didn't seem to be
clear to me but I would assume you would bisque the 'biscuits' before
using them as shelf protectors in the glaze fire?

They can be used both ways, green or bisque fired.
I usually form several of various sizes, let them dry about a week, then us=
e
them.
I use them in combination with a catch plate with my crystalline glazed
pots.
The =B3biscuits=B2 by themselves will not protect the shelf.
