Earth and Fire Pottery on mon 10 sep 07

Hello everyone-

Below is an announcement of an excellent throwing workshop we will be having here in Northern California. We are very excited to present the second of a series of educational and informative workshops exploring a wide variety of topics of interest to potters and ceramic artists.

A weekend hands-on throwing workshop with artist, potter and inventor Al Johnsen at One Earth! Clay and Glass in Ukiah, California
Friday through Sunday October 26th - 28th
Join us for an interactive throwing workshop with Al Johnsen, one of Americas most thought-provoking and outspoken artists.
This workshop, with its focus on throwing on the potters wheel, combines demonstrations and discussions of the elements of design and aesthetics concerning functional pottery, the nuts and bolts of throwing pots in a consistent and well thought-out manner, tricks and shortcuts gleaned from a lifetime of being a successful production potter, as well as the founder of the UC Santa Cruz ceramic program and Scott Creek Pottery. It will be peppered throughout with his unique philosophy gleaned from a rich and varied life, with topics like blending your art with your life, the reality of ceramics today in relation to the very beginnings of the modern American ceramics movement, and more! This workshop will feature a hands-on component, where students will work on the wheel with Al directly.
Potter, inventor, oil painter, philosopher, social and political activist, and lover of life, Al has blazed a path that few can duplicate. He has influenced thousands of students to pursue a life in the arts consistent with the rest of their lives. At 84, Al has a unique view of the history of American ceramics and of our society in general. He feels strongly that there is a place for the ceramic artist in America today, even though working with our hands is little valued by society. For instance, Al feels that society should support artists financially!
This workshop is for beginning and experienced potters and artists alike. Beginners and Intermediate potters will benefit from his years of teaching the fundamentals of making pots, and experienced potters will benefit from his life-long passion for sharing his knowledge and his experience successfully producing a large line of pottery.
The fee for this workshop is only $200. It starts Friday evening October 26th with a reception, and continues until Sunday afternoon on October 28th. Space is limited to 20 people.
Ukiah is two hours north of San Francisco and two hours west of Sacramento.
Sign up today. Limited to 20 people. Just $200.
