We are on our trip to England. We took a trip down to
St Ives yesterday to visit the city and the Leach
pottery which we knew was under renovation, but wanted
to see the site while we were here. The original
building is still there and under intensive
reconstruction with additions of new construction.
Mary, my wife sweet talked the foreman into giving us
a tour, even though there was rubble and scaffolding
all around. There will be a new area for apprentices
and potters to work, a gallery area and a very
extensive display of leaches work. We were even taken
into the kiln area and saw the three chambered wood
fired kiln still standing and went up stares to an
area where Leach contemplated his work and
occasionally slepted according to the foreman, who
seemed pretty well informed about the historical
importance of this area to potters and the English
heritage in general. The buildings will be open to the
public some time after Easter. The pottery sits on top
of a hill, is made of stone and has a view of the sea
below, I am told an unobstructed view when Leach was
there. There are buildings around the pottery now.
The city of St Ives is very dense with very narrow
streets. The driving here is a real challenge, other
side of the street and all. White knuckles for days.
Still on the road, David Cuzick
