Dear Gail;
I am not familiar with the Olsen design, but if there is 'something
missing' you could cast a connection with a good castable
refractory....... one that would have a service limit of 2200 degrees
fahrenheit or more. These are eassy to use if you follow directions
carefully.

I bought an Olsen downdraft kiln which had been sitting unused for severa=

years and I am trying to bring it back to life. All has been going well,=
we
built a nice shed for it, we figured out the plumbing for the gas and wil=

top has me stumped. There is a steel rack built a couple of inches above=
the
kiln into which a kiln shelve will fit and move back and forth, but what
happens between the top of the kiln and the moving kiln shelf? There see=

Great idea. I even happen to have just the right amount of kwool sitting=
unused in a box. I intended to use it to built a portable raku kiln, but=
I
never got beyond the intention.
I'm a big fan of very slow cooling, so any insulation I put on the top wi=
ll be
a big help.
Thanks for your help,
Gail

Hi Gail,
I placed a blanket of kwool on the top of my Olsen kiln, completely cover=
ing
all but the opening. I have no rack, the damper shelf slides on two kiln=
shelves that are placed on either side of the opening, I use glaze tongs =
to
open and close it.
I think in a cold climate the kwool would help a lot to prevent premature=
cooling. Even in California it works well.
