I've been trying to track down some low cost bricks in order to build a wood kiln. I've
located some MgO-C bricks at a local steel mill. I hadn't heard of them before yesterday
so I did some research. They seem to be commonly used as lining bricks for ladles
because they resist slag. From what I've seen they have high thermal conductivity so my
assumption is that I'd need some better insulator (IFB, fiber, etc.) around these MgO-C
bricks if I could even use them on the hot face.
Has anyone used or heard of using these bricks for building pottery kilns?
The guy I spoke with at the steel mill said they were around 85% Magnesium Oxide and
around 6.5% Carbon. I'm not sure about the other materials.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Casey
