The gas valve on my West Coast Kiln is a simple ball valve one could buy =
at any hardware store. Just below the outlet side of the valve is a tee =
fitting into which is plumbed a Inches of Water pressure gage. At =
candle, of coarse, no pressure is being read, but cracking the valve =
open a quarter should show some pressure reading (it has numbers one to =
fifteen on the face) . The gage needle doesn't move until the valve is =
1/2 way open, and then only a very small distence. At the end of the =
firing with the valve completely open it is only registering 3 column =
inches. (It should be reading 11). There is in my neighborhood another =
potter who has a West Coast Kiln ( a third again bigger than my 48 cubic =
foot one). His gas valve has a 1/4 inch port at the bottom on the valve =
casing from which is plumbed his inches of water column pressure gage. =
His gage reads the expected amounts.
QUESTION: Do I need to replace my value with a valve port in the side =
like his (if so where do I look for such a valve) or does my gage need =
to be repaired?
