As long as we're going to 'some kind' of new system, I still have
those pre-1996 archive files. They are actually log files requested
from the old server before it went south in '96. They go back to '93.

It would be good to have the archives as complete as possible but on
the other hand, do you realize how often the 'bat' discussion has
come around? ;-)

Same ol', same ol' with a slight twist each time.

Also, regarding forums, hate'm! I like the listserve that comes to me.

On the other hand if the forum software can also do RSS feeds, it
would probably work for people.

Google Reader is a nice tool for subscribing to and reading RSS
feeds. It's easy to subscribe, once you find the right page on the
feed page that you want to subscribe to (Internet Exploiter 7 shows a
little orange RSS symbol in the menubar). Then Google Reader keeps
lets you know which posts are unread when you login.

It would be nice if it would ONLY show you the unread posts. If
you've been following a dicussion for a long time and have a lot of
posts, it can get a little slow.

One nice feature is that it is web based so where ever you are on
which ever computer, it will always be the same.

On the other hand, I haven't figured out how to keep a collection of
posts. The reader is circular, it only keeps a certain number of
posts at any one time. As new posts come in, old posts are dropped.

I'm currently using it to follow a bunch of blogs like Tony's,
Kelly's and Trevor's, various sellers on Ebay, some websites, the
IKEAHACKER forum and blog (I'll drop the forum, I never go there and
they are cross-posts from the blog anyway), etc.

I don't know how it would work to reply to a post though. I think
that clicking on the reply button will launch the forum and then
you'll have to login and write your reply there. Probably not
workable for the dial-up crowd and not very convenient for the rest of us.

Google Reader also has an off-line mode that might work for the
dial-up crowd to receive posts.

And it's free.

Russel, Off to London again tomorrow and Oxford for the Oxford
Ceramic Fair with Ruth. Then to Paris for the long, All Saint's
weekend with Enzo. Ahhhh, the live of the jet set! (actually, the train set ;-)
