Hi everyone-
I have a question. Do you have any suggestions on how I might be able t=
o find my own place to set up my wheel, kiln, etc to work? My husband and =
I want to move out of our apartment, and I have to say trying to find an ap=
artment with an extra room or a basement or garage is just miserable. Does=
anybody have any ideas? I'm sure everyone has gone through this at some p=
oint, so any suggestions would be wonderful!!! :) Thanks!

You might have less headache looking for a community pottery center,
or even taking classes at a community college. Otherwise -- keep
looking for a place if you need a wheel and a kiln. If you can
divest yourself from the idea that you do need a wheel or a kiln,
then all you need is a board. I once made a 2x4' particle board
"bench" -- it was about 12" high so I had to kneel at it -- and used
that in the second bedroom of my apartment to make handbuilt things.
Then all you need is a campsite with a fire pit, or a BBQ grill
+stovepipe+tinfoil, or a friend with a yard, and you're good to go.
Lowfire stuff of course, but I think it is better to do what one can,
than to wish for the ideal situation and do nothing.

Sorry but it started out sounding like you had lost your studio in the
parking lot at Wal-Mart...You standing there with your ice cream melting
wondering... Now whaaayre did I park it??

Try looking for moderately sized rental spaces in the Industrial Park area
of where you live...if there is an area like that there. That's what I
did.

I rent a 20' X 30' space (in a Gulf States aka Butler Building) that has
electricity included but no plumbing. There is an outside water spigot.
The ceiling height is roughly 16' so I'm adding a full second level. When
completed I'll have about 1000-1200 square feet for $165/month. I can also
utilize the outside space temporarily too...the parking area and concrete
pad outside my 10' wide/12' high roll up door.

Another perk to all that is my "neighbors" in the surrounding units are all
interesting. Cabinet maker...mechanic...musicians(practice space)...etc.

I don't suggest using the laundry room! I did this for about a year while
building my studio. When I was younger I put my kickwheel on my front
porch. I loved that - sitting in the sun throwing pots. Of course I hated
transporting those pots to the studio where I fired. Good luck trying to d=
o
this in an apartment. Is a house out of the question?

Amanda,

Check Collar City Clay Guild. The email is
collarcityclayguild@hotmail.com

Last time I was there, they were in Troy, near the river, just north of
the bridge. I know they rent space to potters. They were talking about
moving, but only a block or so away. The folks who run it also sell
clay, glazes and tools under the name Northeast, and they host
workshops.

Best,

Lois

This is just a thought, but How expensive are rented Storage units in
your neck of the woods? It might be tricky but you could set up a
wheel and work space in one, the Kiln would be an issue, it would
however be a private work space. And most of them have concrete floors
and in some places you can even find climate controlled units. Just an
Idea I wish you the best of luck.

Amanda,

Have you looked on Craigslist?
http://albany.craigslist.org/

You may find a small commercial space for rent or someone looking for a
studio mate.
