marking buckets, foot ring aesthetic

after years of lost labels, i have figured out how to mark buckets.

do not use:
pencil, sharpie, pen.

use a crayon. i use craypas.
an oil based crayon.
it stays on the bucket forever.

labels fall off, sharpie fades in one year.
we have buckets at the farm that sit out all winter.
nothing is left for markings. mystery glaze.

i put a duct tape label on the bucket, then with crayon...temmoku/red/07
then i write directly on the plastic bucket too. same thing.

we as potters do not decide what is a tea bowl.
we can suggest, give them as gifts....but a tea master
decides what is real and good. i have never determined
what i make to be a perfect tea bowl. i have favorites, but
i do not make that judgement. if you follow the japanese
aesthetic...trust it as being a fine, traditional idea...then
you look to them for answers. ask those that understand tea.
in fact...remember, green tea, whisked and consumed is only
a fractional part of the true Tea Ceremony. music, poetry,
flowers, and moon viewing...to mention a few, are vital.

most western potters see pictures, copy them...and then
think..`man, i just made a real japanese tea bowl. you could
not be further from the truth.

i have made a few that some important folks have liked and
made into tea ceremony bowls..`chawan`.
one is named...`the minnetonka bowl`. made me very proud.
it is a respected clay vessel.

most great tea bowls/chawan have very interesting and unique
foot rings. some carved, some turned, some just hacked out.
they must relate to the entire bowl.
tricky.

Good idea, Mel........it's also erasable.

I make a small tile tag, thread a twist-tab through the top hole of
the tag and attach it to the bail of the bucket. Don't even have to
read. heh

OK I must admit I'm quite proud of myself that I secretly put bands of vinyl
tape in yellow, brown, blue, green, red, black, white, purple, and orange on
the many glaze buckets at the art center. Now when I look for mother-in-law
blue (LOL) or Iron red I can at least only go for the red taped or blue
taped buckets! We all know that Murphey's Law rules that the labels are always
facing the wall. I found they had packets of tape at our local Home Depot with
multicolors.

I really deserve a Claytimes t-shirt or something
