mft kiln questions

Hi folks! Mel, something from you maybe?
I am in the midst of building an MFT following the plans that are
downloadable from Pottery Making Illustrated. The article was written by
Mel Jacobson and Kurt Wild and was published in the March/April 05. So
here are the questions. Following the plans I am left with interior
dimensions of 31 1/2" wide and 36" deep.
With these measurements and the suggestion to place the shelves 2" off the
floor, this means the edge of the shelves are directly in the flame path.
Is there something I am misunderstanding? Wouldn=92t this be a bad thing?
Now in the article it is mentioned that Kurt built the door in the side of
his kiln. But I don=92t see how this would make a difference. In fact, even
if I redo the burner ports to be all the way against the walls the shelves
would still protrude into the flame path. Please see the picture I posted
on my web site at the bottome of the first page.
(www.mtpleasantpottery.com) Click on the pic, it will open for a closer
look. Note the shelves are all the way to the rear for emphasis. I realize
that during a firing the shelves will be in the center, more or less.

Another question: The first course for the walls is a soldier course. In
this course in the drawing it shows several 2=94 openings=85I think. What ar=
e
these for?

Thanks!
