I have suscribed to Clayart almost since its=20
beginning with Richard, Joe and Mary. I no=20
longer contribute but still read most posts in=20
digest form. However, should the email format be=20
cancelled, I would regretfully sign off.
For those who remember me, I gave up potting for=20
3 years after making about a thousand identical=20
ashtrays for practically nothing. With all the=20
buildings which have mushroomed around me, I no=20
longer dare to use my homemade gas kilns in the=20
patio, but a few months ago I bought a tiny=20
electric Nabertherm Top/16R kiln including=20
furniture, stand and wheels. It is solidly made=20
and has a very simple controller which fits my=20
needs for single-fired earthenware (^04) although=20
it will fire to 1300C=BA, and I can still make the=20
occasional 10" plate. When not in use, I just=20
cover it and push it under the wedging table. I=20
figure I have enough clay, tools and chemicals=20
left over from early days (including such things=20
as Gerstley borate and Alberta slip shipped over=20
from Canada together with my excellent old=20
Pacifica wheel) to pot in a leisurely way for the rest of my life :)

I agree with everything Alisa said: find the right email/digest
software first and then add modulues since that seems to be the
preferred format. Also totally agree that preserving the old archives
is important.
I wonder whether we could turn the archives into a clay wikipedia
which could move forward with the list. Maybe that's what a forum is
(not familiar with that format). But the nice thing about wikipedia
is that it does allow all users to edit, so that the info on pug
mills, for example, or slab rollers or paper clay could be condensed
over time (when and if someone felt energetic enough) hopefully
without editing out opposing views, but perhaps editiing out some of
the extraneous info. Perhaps some of us (if it got to that point)
could volunteer to write an entry for one of the archive subjects
using the info in the various emails now archived under that
subject. More of an editing job really. I would be willing to do
that for one or more subjects if the need is there.
Nancy in Santa Fe where it can't decide whether to be cold or not
yet. We went from a hard freeze Tuesday morning to 80deg yesterday.
Snow was on the mountains and now has melted already...

The only problem I see to setting the current archives up as a wiki or
separate archive, is that we'll have a discontinuous archive. New message
posts would go into the new archive, so when searching we'd have to do two
separate searches for the same thing. It could even be three if the pre-1996
archives are brought back into yet another separate archive. Ideally, it
would be best to load the pre-1996 archves and the current ClayArt archives
into whatever new system we go with. That can be a big job since the data
formats may be different. The ability to load any existing archives should
be a significant factor in the decision for a new system.
