Nothing like kicking up a little interest in NYC clay!

Glad to hear of all the Brooklyn potteries - do you all have a map or is
there some sort of pamphlet or online listing of open studios there?

Must differ with several things said -
Nancy Margolis Gallery in Chelsea has fabulous ceramics - seems like half
her artists work in clay - not functional but great sculptural work -
Takashimaya also has a few really nice American potters -
I mentioned Mackenzie-Childs because I believe they started out in clay and
although it's factory made now and they've expanded their lines - you must
admit it is a riotous place - especially for the out-of-town visitor
Jane Harstook Gallery at Greenwich House may not be as big as Baltimore
Clayworks or the Clay Studio in Philly but - hey - it's here - I'm sure they'd
love to expand if Greenwich House real estate wasn't what it is! I think the
gallery is well worth a visit if it's clay you're looking to see in NY -

One of the biggest thrills as you hop to all these places is the subway art
- this is a pretty good site for an overview -

Hi Meg,

There is no "Potter's Guide to Brooklyn," alas. Your best bet to meet
Brooklyn potters is to check out studio tours, like the Gowanus and
Red Hook tours, go to local shows such as the upcoming "Clay
Festival" in December, or join a group like Brooklyn Potters (which
is open to anyone, not just Brooklynites). There are lots of us
here-- just keep your ears open for events.
