Hi:
Fred and Gail have already mentioned glaze and thickness of glaze having a
dissipating effect on the iron but I might add a couple of things that may
be helpful.
Calcium takes iron into suspension and dilutes it very effectively. A lot
of cone 6 ox glazes have plenty of calcium from whiting and some sort of
calcium borate material so that may be adding to the problem.
I've had a fair amount of difficulty getting the iron concentration that
I've wanted over and under glazes at cone 10 R. What I've done is mix the
iron 50/50 with J-2 ball clay to get some alumina in the mix to retard the
dissolving nature of some of the ash and celadons that I use. This has
worked very well both over and under any of the glazes. Some are better
though. So it goes. An example of the mix is 50 grams of red iron to 50
grams of J-2 ball clay added to 100ml of water. It's then passed twice
thru a 100 mesh sieve,
