A truly incredible experience was had by all 75 participants who attended
the woodfiring conference held in rural Bailey, NC Oct 31-Nov 2. The
workshop was hosted by potter Dan Finch and led by Ben Owen 111 of
Seagrove, NC.

Glazing and socializing began at noon on Friday. Most participants brought
four bisqued pieces which were glazed and placed in the 400 cubic foot
Anagama kiln, which has affectionately become known as "Mamagama" . The
kiln was lit with great ceremony!! Each participant, many in Halloween
costumes, placed a piece of lit lighter wood in the firebox. We then had
a sake toast from cups Dan Finch made for all of and then gave us as
souveniers of the weekend. The first crew came on duty with lit
jack-o-laterns all around, supper was served and the slide presentations
and throwing demonstrations began and continued through the weekend. We
did a pit firing and a major fireworks display Saturday night after
enjoying a southern style pig pickin'!!

It was truly a weekend never to be forgotten. Ben gave 100% and then
some!! And we got to meet his lovely fiancee, Lori Ann!! Many, many
thanks to Dan Finch for hosting this conference to Ben for his generosity.

For those with travel lust, Sunday Nov 9, 1pm-5pm Dan will host an open
studio and sale for his approximately 40 students. There will be lots of
potters to meet, a blacksmith, a silversmith, petting zoo for the kids,
throwing demos, pit firing, refreshments and more. This is an annual
event and is expected to draw between 4,000 and 6,000 visitors and
shoppers. Hwy 58l N, Bailey NC. Call if you have questions. Jackie
