what I must see ceramically speaking?

hope the great weather holds out! your euro will go FAR HERE!! lucky you!
lots to see in nyc but not as much functional pottery as you would imagine
even though there are many many potters and available studio rental space -
here are some terrific possibilities - remember that Friday's New York Times
has all the artistic doings for the weekend - both visual and performing -
also "timeout ny", a magazine, is good for that

one of our best ceramic galleries - garth clark - has closed to the public -
ouch -

Nancy Margolis Gallery _www.nancymargolisgallery.com_
(http://www.nancymargolisgallery.com) 523 west 25th in Chelsea - she specializes in ceramic art -
while you're there get the november Gallery Guide (free) which will list ALL
nyc shows (thousands of them) and you can figure out what you want to see
art-wise

Greenwich house pottery - 16 jones street -the best in the city -
greenwichhousepottery.org - in greenwich village and has a great gallery as well

Chelsea Ceramic GUild - potter studio rental - maybe you could stop by and
say hello! in Chelsea and not far from the chelsea art scene - also check
out the very cool Chelsea Market while you're around - ask someone for
directions-

the Mudpit - Brooklyn - 228 manhattan ave _www.mudpitnyc.com_
(http://www.mudpitnyc.com) - studio space but not worth the trip to brooklyn

Mud Sweat and Tears _www.mstpottery.com_ (http://www.mstpottery.com) -
upper west side - functional - a little studenty -

Simon Pearce - 59th st at Park Ave - son of the Irish potter - beautiful
workshop produced line of clay and glass

Takashimaya - _www.takashimaya-ny.com_ (http://www.takashimaya-ny.com) -
beautiful and $$ japanese department store - has some very nice pottery - 6th
flr is garden stuff and 3rd flr is house stuff - 5th ave about 55th-ish
street

Mackenzie-Childs - what a hoot! fun store with zany "pottery" (now mold
made but way fun) 14 west 57th st

Ochre - Broome street in SOHO (near Greene) has some beautiful pottery and
other earthly delights

ABC Department store - where I take all my out-of-town friends- amazing
emporium in the most turn-of-the-century sense - 19th st at Broadway -

The Met - (metropolitan museum of art) at 83 and 5th ave - more clay than
you can look at in a week - not organized by materials but by civilizations
so you can find it all over the place - just wonderful - worth the pricey
admission but remember that it is SUGGESTED and not essential

MAD - Museum of Arts and Design - _www.madmuseum.org_
(http://www.madmuseum.org) formerly the Craft Museum before the word "craft" was determined a
non-commercial word in NYC - West 53rd between 5th and 6th - fabulous museum
shop (as is the Modern Museum of Art museum shop AND the American Folk Art
Museum shop on the same block) -

do have fun here - the most electric, exciting and inspiring place in the
world - one "must do" is to take the 2, 3 or the A subway to the first stop in
brooklyn and walk back over the brooklyn bridge into manhattan - ahhh -
then up through chinatown, little italy, nolita, west across soho and up into
greenwich village for the most amazing day ever

Meg,
I am a little taken back at the slight on my studio. Who are you? Do I know
you? Have you ever been here? And most importantly why are you saying my
studio is not worth a 15 min. train ride! I have more space and equipment than
almost every other studio in this city. I know for a fact that I will also allow
people to make more and experiment more than any other studio. I have
re-configured space, built equipment and bent over backwards for people when they
have had specific projects. If you are going to drop a bomb shell like that I
wish you would explain yourself

Cindy --

Ya gotta read the thread, sometimes. The original question
was from someone who was looking for interesting pottery-
related sites to see during a brief visit to NYC.

You make a wonderful defense of your studio as a teaching/
working location. If I lived 3000-some miles closer and
didn't have a workplace of my own, I'd like to have the
opportunity to work at your space. If I were visiting for
a week, I wouldn't take the time to visit your studio.

Hi Steve,
Ya know I did read it and then re-read it. I guess what I am reacting to is
the fact that The original post was indeed someone looking to see pottery-
galleries, museums and the like. The few studios she listed -Greenwich house,
Mud,sweat and tears and the chelsea ceramic guild do have gallery spaces
attached to there studios. I do not, I want one, I sure as hell have the space for
one but, I don't have the time to set it up --yet. There really was no
reason to mention my place. To add that it isn't worth it well I'd like to know
why. Did she mean exactly what you are saying or is there something else. I did
some thinking and I think I might possibly know who Meg is. If I am right
her words are harsh and out of context and I would like the chance to defend
something that is very precious to me. I admit I am a very sensitive person I
bleed easily This studio literally saved my life so I defend it like a
mother tiger and her cubs.I am also a firm believer in If you don't have anything
nice to say keep your mouth shut. But, when push comes to shove unless Meg
answers we won't know anything will we?

Cindy,

Why would you even care who said something negative about your studio,
especially caring what an anonymous person said!!! You are giving this
person credence! Do your own thing with your studio. Why worry about a
person who hides in the shadows? Forget it,let it go, why waste time on
negative issues?
