cones blow; help

While I was firing my gas kiln to Cone 5 my cone pack exploded and I was
unable to read the temp. My pyrometer is not reliable. Anyway, most of
the load has not matured and I'm wondering how successful a re-fire will
be. I'm also wondering how successful a new dip of glaze would be if
it's added to the pots and re-fired.

Any advice is very much appreciated. Thank you, Allison in chilly,

hi allyson a refire can usually improve uderfired pots // they will look a
bit overdone but generally i am happy with the results // if i don,t like
piece i will usually refire it b4 it goes under the hammer
putting glaze on fired pots is difficult and not worth the effort

cheers

Allison,
how successful a refiring would be depends a lot on the individual glazes you
are using. my experience, at cone 5/6 electric, says it is likely to be
successful for a lot of glazes. i would refire without trying to add more
glaze. i never had a result worth the effort when trying to add more glaze.

Allison...just leave it loaded, add new cones and refire. Taking the work
out and reglz. is just a big head ache and not necessary...just refire
it...it will be fine. And don't put wet cone pats in or at least poke some
air holes in the pat..that is if youa re using clay as your cone pat. ;>}}

I have seen different results on refiring, but all may be better than the
alternative of having underfired ware. The most interesting result was from a
very stiff majolica type glaze that crawled all over the pots. While this was
not the intension of a majolica glaze, the results were interesting. Other
glazes have benifited from the extra firing time. So to say anything just
give it a try and see what happens. I used to glaze fire things once and that
was it, now I seem to enjoy the multiply firings and results (though they are
not as fiscally responsible, just more fun).

The weather seems fine in Saettle today

I've refired and had no problem. The ware turned out fine, was vitreous
and passed the microwave test. I just had to re-wax the bottoms. Good
luck. Jean
