the colors of chemicals

Hi Pat, sorry you are having a bad experience with Texas. We
Texans generally aim to please.
Volcanic ash varies tremendously depending on what it is and where
it came from. So, there certainly is white volcanic ash, as well as
black, gray, yellow, and who knows what else.
As for the talc, you probably received Texas talc, which is, indeed,
dark gray. Don't worry, the dark color doesn't mean it will make
your glazes gray.

I am fairly new in making my own glazes and have been ordering my chemicals
from a company in Texas. They made so many mistakes with my orders that I
have gone back to ordering from Axner, even though I have to pay a 7% sales
tax and a $4 handling fee. My question is, this company in Texas sent me
talc, which is a dark gray, and volcanic ash, which is white. As I don't
trust the company because of all their other mistakes, could you tell me if
this is the correct colors for these items?

I am only passingly familer with these chemicals, but I had thought talc
was white, and volcanic ash was dark grey. Perhaps they swapped the labels?

Talc can be a light grey and is not always white. Talc is soapstone
(steatite) and volcanic ash can vary in value. Usually volcanic will
feel coarser, while talc will feel very smooth generally. Talc when put
in water will have some of it float on the surface. Do a fusion button
of each to see what the fired results are. Mix up some known glaze and
use the material you suspect to be mislabeled.

I want to thank everyone that replied to my "The colors of chemicals" =
question. I have decided after tasting, floating and feeling, that the =
gray talc and white volcanic ash are correctly labeled.

ToWilliam "Bill" Schran suggestion "Why don't you call the owner, tell =
him/her what the problems have been and let them know that you have =
decided not to do business with them anymore due to their incompetence?" =
I did.

I really liked this company, inexpensive chemicals, no handling charge =
and a fair shipping fee. When they got my first order wrong, they =
corrected it and all was good. I decided to use them again a few months =
later. My order came with 4 mistakes (charged for something I did not =
order and was not in box, changed for some thing I did order and was not =
in box, wrong chemical, I ordered Manganese Carb and I got Magnesium =
Carb and ordered 5 lbs of OM4 and only got 1 lb. Dealt with a very =
friendly and funny man that promised all would be corrected. He =
apologized and said all would be sent with no additional shipping =
charge. Got my corrected order, however it was still missing the Yellow =
Ochre which I was charged again for and was also charged for shipping! =
I called and the woman that I talked to inferred I was lying about the =
Yellow Ochre not being in the box. She claimed she packed it herself. =
She also complained about the "man-hours" spent on my order. I finally =
got my Ochre and was credited for the shipping I was charged for twice, =
but was charged an extra 8.25 %, for what, I don't know. It was not =
charged on my other orders. I e-mailed them stating I would not, under =
any circumstances, use them, or recommend them, again.

Sorry to take up space on the list with this, but you can see why I =
didn't trust the chemicals I got from them. Axner is my supplier from =
now on, unless some of you can direct me to a better site for chemical =
ordering.
