Marni:

At the NCECA meeting two years ago, Steve Hill led a workshop on glazing
once-fired pots. He glazes at the bone-dry stage. From my notes:

1. The glazes must have clay in them, but not excessive. Not less than
5-10%. Does not need to be ball clay; Hill uses mostly EPK.

2. More open clay bodies work better, e.g. with some ball clay and grog.

3. Lack of a bisque means no prior chance to burn out "loss on ignition"
stuff. Venting an electric kiln just via peepholes may not be adequate:
use a forced air exhaust system.

4. Hill glazes the inside first, then when just dry, glazes the outside.

5. Avoid glazes high in gerstley borate.

6. He uses a long preheat to drive off water: 5-6 hours to ^08, at which
point he begins reduction. Uses 2-3 hr soak at ^10.

7. See articles in Studio Potter, vol. 7, no. 1 and Ceramics Monthly
January 1986.
