In some scraps of plywood I drilled three 1/2 inch holes on one side.
The holes were located on a circle drawn on the plywood 1/2 inch greater
than the diameter of my wheel head (14 inches on my historic brent). Then
I put 1/2 inch dowels in the holes and turned it over and put it onto the
wheelhead. The dowels are surprisingly accurate on the few that I've put
together so far. They seem to fit over the wheelhead snugly and don't
require any further fastening. They were very easy to make, and they
leave the wheelhead free of pins when they're removed.
