moving to dc

I have just returned from Washington DC and on the
first interview I have landed my dream job - first
grade. No they won't be ready for wheel throwing but
maybe some pinching. I think ceramics will be a
summer thing unless I find a place in DC to work on
weekends. If you have any suggestions for that I
would appreciate it. Also, if you are familiar with
any dog friendly apartments where I can walk them at
night and early in the morning in relative safety,
please let me know. The principal would like for me
to start on the 19th of this month. What's a little
stress after glaze chemistry and fire?

Thanks,

Linda

i live in dc, and believe it or not it's a pretty good town for pottery.

the very best place, in my humble opinion, (and the place i go) is Hinckley=
Pottery in the adams morgan neighborhood, http://www.hinckleypottery.com. =
You have to sign up for classes 10 weeks at a time, but you can do whateve=
r you want once in the class (it's not like 'today we are making mugs' it's=
more you show up and if you need help with anything there is a teacher the=
re, and the teachers are all very, very experience with most of them having=
20-40 years experience). they do gas firing to cone 10. 10 weeks, one cl=
ass per week, 2.5 hours per class, $300 includes glazing/firing/materials/e=
verything.=20

there are advanced classes at the Corcoran art gallery, and with the classe=
s come unlimited use of their facilities and you can do absolutely anything=
you want from slip casting to throwing. The Corcoran is expensive, but so=
me employers including most schools in dc will pay for it. I have a friend=
who works for DC public schools and is getting several of his classes at t=
he Corcoran paid for and he is having a fantastic time, so you should defin=
itely check that out.

There is a park called Glen Echo, and they also have pottery facilities. =20

In addition, there is a place called Torpedo Factory. You will have to loo=
k them up, I'm not sure what their prices are like or if they have space av=
ailable.=20

There was, up until a few months ago, a place called Eastern Market, but it=
burned down (not the potters' fault).

Lastly, there are small pottery studios sprinkled about at various communit=
y centers in the suburbs (Lee Arts Center in Arlington VA, Lake Anne Commun=
ity Center in Reston VA, another place in Takoma Park, MD). =20

welcome to the neighborhood :-)

Linda,

Welcome to the area. I highly recommend the Lee Arts Center in Arlington. You
have to be a member and there might be a waiting list, but it is worth
getting into, if you don't mind the commute. Several of the members live in D.C.,
and other areas. If you would like to know more about it, let me know.

Hi Linda,
Congratulations! Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner-my schedule was crazed until last weekend. So where are you teaching? And how far are you willing to commute? Lots of clay opportunities-depends on where you end up and how much driving you're up for. Let me know. Do get in touch with me when you get here! I'd love to meet you.
