Gene: I just fired my Olympic D-17 today. A simple 17c.f. box with six
burners, three on the right, three on the left, fueled by natural gas.
I go into heavy body reduction as cone 08 is falling, keep it in for
about 20 minutes by closing the damper to about a quarter inch, with
lots of flame around the damper and fairly long flame from the top and
bottom peeps on the door. After that 20 minutes, I open the damper
maybe another half-inch so that I get steady flame from the damper and
maybe 3-6 inches from each peep. And that's where it stays, in moderate
reduction, until I reach about cone 10.5 and I do maybe ten minutes of
oxidation at the end, before shutting it down. I consistently get even
reduction top and bottom, the only occasional exception being a
stacking error on my part. That's what works for me. We'll see how
today's firing went when I open tomorrow morning.

I recently fired my new MFT gas kiln with good results, except in the =
reduction. The pots at the top were reduced OK but the ones on the =
bottom were under reduced. This is my first time firing any gas kiln.
Mel has told me what he does for reduction but I would like to hear from =

When you start reduction do you stay in reduction until the end of the =
firing??
I firing on propane to cone 10 with two ransom B-4 burners.
Thanks for any suggestions!!

when that happens in our kiln, we close the chimney damper a little and red=
uce the airflow. sometimes, once we reach temperature or just before, we t=
urn off the air altogether for an hour of solid reduction. that can help a=
lot. =20
i think you can fiddle with the target and damper blocks too, but i don't k=
now much about that.=20
either way, whenever you get a new kiln you have to spend several firings e=
xperimenting around to find out what works.

Its been a while siince I've fired with propane but here's what I remember- propane can fool you with how much reduction you get. A flame color that would indicate reduction with natural gas can be neutral withe propane. With the kiln I fired the flame was orange and stringy and would leave soot smuges. This was achieved by manipulating an atmosphereic damper and having backpressure at the bottom spy. (In some kilns with atmosphere ic dampers you can look into the trough and see that the reducing flames come down below the bottom shelf.) The schedule was ^04-^1 and again at ^9.
