Here are our three most popular glazes (besides Floating Blue) that we
use in my ceramics classes:
Albany Dark Blue (Black base with dark blue flecks)
Albany Slip 80
Gerstley 15
Cobalt Carb 5
Gerstley Green (A clear green, and a brighter green pools on texture and
where thick)
Gerstley 50
Kaolin 20
Flint 30
Red Copper Oxide 3.0%
Rutile 3.0%
Iguana Green (Thin coat starts out orange, but two turns into a bright
and shiny turquoise or green)
3110 Frit 30
Nephylene Syenite 20
Gerstley 15
Tin 12.5
Bentonite 1
Copper Carb 2
(Oh, and I'm sorry to anyone who doesn't have Gerstley. Maybe you could
try with Gerstley's replacement and see if these work, since eventually
our stockpile of Gerstley will run out.)
The Albany is runny with our new Albany Slip we have, and Gerstley Green
doesn't have any problems I've noticed, and Iguana crazes where it is
very, very thick.

I should remember next time that I email clayart to double check and see
if I'm giving all of the information I can. I forgot a lot of stuff...
sorry.
These are Cone 6 Oxidation. All of them are gloss and to me they're the
best ones out of the 20 or so that we have. I don't know if someone made
the glaze or got it from some literature, but they've been around for 20
years or so.

yeah red copper oxide exists. it's Cu2O, while black copper oxide is CuO2.=
you can read about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copper%28I%29_ox=
ide
it's partially what people believe forms in copper reds red (although it's =
possible that it's also actual tiny crystals of copper metal that form). I =
read some papers that concluded it was a mixture, but I don't know what the=
latest thinking on that is.
trouble with red copper oxide is that sitting on your chemical shelf it wil=
l turn to black copper oxide over time as it oxidizes unless it's sealed up=
very well. some suppliers will coat it in some kind of water repellent co=
mpound to keep it from oxidizing, and that can make it tough to mix into a =
glaze. in that case, you can mix in a little bit of dish soap or laundry d=
etergent and that will get the stuff mixed in pretty well. i have a raku g=
laze somewhere that i had to do that with. it's been sitting in a closed j=
ar for about a year, the surface of the glaze inside the jar has reoxidized=
to black, but beneath that it's still red. =20
one might think that the red copper would oxidize to black copper as the ki=
ln is heated but that's not necessarily so. i'm sure that it does if you f=
ire in oxidation, but reduction probably not as much. =20
