Hello All,

We receive interesting emails from time to time because of our website
listings. Recently we were sent this email by a lady in Missouri.
Obviously we are a little far away from Missouri but those of you who are
closer might want to take a look. All we know about this lady is she once
bought a DVD from us.

Jim --

As is well known I am a cynic about anything coming in
unsolicited in an e-mail.

Odd as it is that someone with heavy things to sell in
Missouri should contact someone in Alberta, this story
gets weirder.

There is a Patricia Standley from Tina, Missouri listed
on ZoomInfo. According to her profile, she's a "Full
member of the Instititute of Direct Marketing" and has
a degree in law, that seems to be from the UK.

Would a direct marketing expert in Missouri try to sell
heavy objects to a person she doesn't know in Alberta?
It makes me suspicious.

Would a trained lawyer, whose studies focused on
European business law, and who worked for Research
machines, BICC and Colt International (all sufficiently
vague company names, but each likely relating to a UK
company) normally write with lower case 'i's? Or write an
entire paragraph in upper case? Or confuse common
words like "sell" and "sale"?

There is a passing fair possibility that message is
trolling for a trusting soul for a scam.

Of course other possibilities do exist. Still, buyer
beware appears to be a significant operating principle.

Steve,

I admire your efforts to protect us all from internet scams, and God knows
there are millions, but I think your research has you barking up the wrong
tree. Yes there is a Patricia Standley who is a lawyer in the UK. There is
also a lady in the Ozarks named Patricia Standley who has had some hard
times, who thought she wanted to start a pottery business, changed her
mind and has a pile of equipment she wants to sell. Fran Johnson was a
little more proactive and sent me the Brackers Clay Company site where
Patricia can, and has, posted her stuff for sale free. We sold this lady a
DVD over a year ago just after she lost her only son in a car crash and
she was looking for something to pour herself into. She now realizes she
chose poorly. Trust me when I say she is authentic. Of course maybe I'm
not who I say I am either. There is a Jim Willett in ZoomInfo who was the
warden of Texas State Penitentiary. Now HE is scary!
We receive all the usual scams and a few more creative ones because we
have a fairly high internet profile in certain areas. We also get
approached with legitimate offers.(Would you like to buy 20,000 pieces of
Chinese lacquer ware from the 1920's? I can get you a good deal. We also
got a call from Texas that has lead us to literally tons of African
sculpture, in Texas!)We have gotten pretty good at spotting the phonies.
Ms Standley wrote back to me to say she had thought we were geographically
closer to her than we are and she appreciated our efforts on her behalf.
I'm sure if any of you give her a call or email you will find she is not
too scary at all.

Sincerely,
THE Jim Willett

Jim --

I wish I could say that it is implausible that one of my
countrymen living in Missouri would not know where -- or
how far away -- Canada is. Regrettably, I cannot.

The addition of a sob story to the mix doesn't make me
more confident of the offer. If you have personal knowledge
of the lady, you could have offered it along with the original
post. In any event, the woman can't in any practical way sell
high-weight low-value items (like the clay she's flogging)
except locally.
