tile press modifications

My husband built the tile press in Frank Giorgini's book. I want to
modify it to use a bottle jack or some other device since I am unable
to apply sufficient pressure due to arthritic shoulders. Has anyone
modified his plan or have any suggestions?

I had the same problem with mine. I tried disassembling it and moving
the works closer to the fulcrum. The idea was to get less travel out
of the plunger but more leverage out of the handle. I still wasn't
satisfied with it though. It just took too many chin-ups to get an
impression made.
At Northerntool.com I bought a 2-ton bearing press. The press was
cheap but the shipping was not. Out of the spare parts from the
Giorgini press I built a little support plate and plunger and attached
them to the bearing press. I bolted the bearing press to my table and
that was that. It's working great for me. My only problem with this
setup is that I have had to change from using #1 pottery plaster molds
to Hydrostone because the pressure of the press tends to break the
plain plaster molds. The Hydrostone doesn't release as easily/quickly
as plain plaster but I dust my clay blanks with cornstarch and this
speeds up release quite a bit.
Hope this helps
