Hi Tom,

Please note that Polly uses the term "food safe" (or not) where I
use the terms "stable" or "durable". That glaze had been rated as
suitable for functional work by Polly when she got in a bind and
didn't have time to get the glazes to me before her deadline. I
fussed at her and told her I would not have rated it that way. I
think it would be unsuitable for functional work because it is way
low in silica (1.6 or 1.7 if I remember) and has a fair amount of
copper carbonate (3%?). That is just asking for durability problems--
maybe even bitter food problems--I certainly would not want to buy a
functional piece with that glaze on it.

We have currently decided that the logistics of trying to do those
ratings makes life very difficult for both of us and are going to
discontinue them as a routine part of Clay Times. If you see any
ratings in future issues of Clay Times that don't have my name
specifically associated with them, be aware they are estimates--
probably made by Polly or one of her staff. There is likely no
analysis of the composition behind the ratings.

John,

That's too bad for the mag. When I saw the clarification in the latest
issue, I guessed at what had happened. I think it's a bad move on the
magazine's part but it does make your life less hectic. Thankfully
your criteria for stable and durable glazes are very clear in MC6G.
Rock on!

Hi Taylor,

Please write Polly and tell her that. She has received practically no
feedback that anyone thinks it is valuable. I have personally
received a little, but not much.
