Last night Jim, my husband, had me read a short section from a book he
is greatly enjoying: "The Universe Story" by Swimme & Berry.
Perhaps because I had greatly appreciated a post by Steve Slatin on
the subject of glazes, the reading reminded me of glaze work,
materials, recipes and unity formulas. I offer just one paragraph
from that reading:
"To understand an oak tree, we must understand that the oak tree can
be analyzed down to its elements. In the same manner, to understand
the elements we must learn that in their own activities are the
potentialities out of which the oak tree can be evoked. Each speaks a
truth about the other. The oak tree reveals the carbon; the carbon
reveals the oak. So too with everything in the universe. To
understand the thing we need intellectually to analyze its component
parts. We also need intellectually to understand the unity of
functioning of the parts within the whole. Only by confronting the
thing with knowledge gotten from both directions do we arrive at full
knowledge-the integral nature of the thing there before us."
