another wheel evaluation question.

Dear group;

My friend and former student James Laub is building a clay studio
here in Eugene and will need 10 wheels for the classroom as well as
20 wheels for the communal workroom. His teaching staff has argued
for the Shimpo VL WHISPER wheel, but I wonder if the Thomas Stuart
Legend would be a better choice. Then there are the Studio models of
Soldner's design. Buying this many wheels should produce a fair price
on any of these, or perhaps the order could be split between two or
more models.

If you were building a studio for both accomplished and beginning
potters...... what would you advise?

Cheers, Hank

I am a big Thomas Stuart fan but the Shimpo is a much quieter wheel. The
noise doesn't seem to bother me as much as it does some. Of the two I would
go for the one that saves you the most money.

Pacifica GT 400. I have 7 and have had no problems. I had my first pacifica for 20 years with one foot pedal repair and new brushes in the motor. Order them from Joan at Bennetts pottery supply in Ocoee Fl for a great price and great service.

Hey Mr. Hank,
Well I know I am no authority on the subject. I have used the Shimpo
vl whisper, I liked it I thought it was a really good wheel just need
to make sure you get one with plenty of horsepower :))) The only thing
I didn't like about it was it wasn't nearly as easy to work on as the
RK2 ( which is a piece of cake to fix most of the time). I also like
the way The shimpo can be stacked and stored as well as cleaned ,
which I would want for a student situation. Be honestly they are ( in
my opinion so similar I would go with the best deal ).

There is my 2 coppers, hope it helps.

I have a Soldner and I swear by it because of the foot pedal. Also noise is
minimum. I tried the wisper in China and found it acceptable for student
use.

Our school uses Brents.

Hank -
If Jim's teaching staff is all lobbying for the Whisper, then why even
consider any other wheel? I have had a number of students purchase the VL
Whisper, and it is a wonderful wheel. I'd go for all Whispers.
