like your web host? i need a new one

My web host has sold the company, and the new one sucks - poor customer
service and double prices.

Anyone love their web host? I'm NOT looking for free, or anything that
makes you have an ad. I am not looking for the cheapest. My dream host has
great customer service, e-commerce capabilities, and RELIABILTIY.

thanks for the advice!

Hi Lois,

I recently switched for not dissimilar reasons. I am now with IX
Web hosting. But our guild uses Hostway.com. IX is a discount host but
has good customer support - they even talk to you politely before you
sign up. You can instant chat with their people anytime. They offer
business packages and ecommerce etc. I have custom built my site so I
don't know much about it but check them out and ask questions :
www.ixwebhosting.com. Their Terms of Service state that they guarantee
99.9% uptime which is more than enough for most of us I would think.
If you are looking to assess reliability check out netcraft.com which
has uptime stats for a bunch of hosting companies and produce a top
ten list monthly - eg.

GoDaddy is in the top 10 this month (well October but its the latest
month I can see) I see.

Thanx
D

Dan Semler praised IX and mentioned their guaranteed uptime. They
are very polite and helpful people as he said, and their price is
good, but if I were a commercial enterprise I'd have switched
long ago: they were unavailable to the web for 51 hours in
October, 102 in September, 97 in July this year... The uptime
they refer to is for their server computer, it doesn't include
their upstream connection to the web. And, they are moving soon,
which will mean more downtime.

Pick any good one recommended. I'm partial to DreamHost (cheap, fun
and fairly reliable, good for hosting gaggles of sites and playing
with server-side goodies, but can go down now and then), Pair (solidly
reliable and affordably priced, non-profit hosting discounts
available) and Tigertech (helpful, reliable and responsive, cheap-
enough).

Visit http://hosting-review.com/ for more on what's involved in a
hosting account.

Somebody already mentioned GoDaddy ... I second the motion .
I host my personal website, my husband's lap steel
guitar website and a friend's animal rescue site all
through GoDaddy and they are cheap ( you can get plenty of
space for about 5 bucks a month ) , reliable ( Famous last
words, but I have been with them a for about 6 years now
and have not had the site go down ) and they have great
customer service...
We host our PPIO website through LFhosting only because
we have special requirements for our databases..

I just had a bad experience with my web host and switched to godaddy.
I only have a few weeks experience with them but I can tell you that
I received excellent technical support while setting everything up.

I switched over to HostMonster about 6 months ago and have been very
pleased. Their help desk responds promptly, but I usually don't need it
because they have a good online help system and forum. They have a huge
array of features, even more impressive when you consider the price.

Hi David

By golly, you're right, they don't have a toll free number. I don't
have a land line, just a cell phone and don't pay additional for long
distance so it didn't occur to me to look for that. (Now I'll be
awake all night second-guessing my decision.)

Thanks all for the input. I went with APlus.net. Great customer service -
i was changed over in a few hours.

i think all of the hosts recommended were quite good and very comparable to
each other.

Thaks again

Check out Network Synergies :

Very reasonable cost, about 0% down time, three levels of service
(including e-commerce options), amazingly user friendly control panel
PLUS a web disk you can keep on your desktop, totally eliminating the
need for an FTP client. (You can click and drag files/folders between
your computer and your server space--like Mac's iDisk).

I was prompted to write in when I saw Connie's GoDaddy
recommendation. I know several Clayart subscribers use
and like GoDaddy.

Well, based on previous Clayart recommendations, I tried
switching to GoDaddy when I was not happy with my host.
Incredibly, with all the effort companies spend to get people
to switch, nothing was ever done! Finally, after 3 or 4 weeks,
I asked for and got a refund. Of course, this took more than
an hour of my time as well as long distance non-toll-free calls.
Unless things have changed, GoDaddy does not have toll-free
help lines, so the technical support may be good but you pay
for it if you pay for long distance calls.

My company, that I was not happy with, is "1 & 1". I was not
happy because my e-mails were not being forwarded in a timely
manner. This was last year. The problem was fixed and has
not happened again, and they gave me 3 free months of
hosting to make amends.

I was also not happy with the company I used before 1 & 1,
NetFirms.
So, I think the real bottom line is that all web hosting
companies are OK 99% of the time but they ALL screw up
sometimes. If it has not happened to you, it will eventually.

This leads me to conclude that choosing based on price is as
good as any other criteria and will result in more $$ left in
your pocket. 1 & 1 is a huge European company. I saw their
ads in PC Magazine (it's there every month) and switched
based on price. Prices start at $3.95 a month ($23.70 for 6
months) for hosting with all the space a potter will ever need,
and domain registration is included in the price. They usually
have specials to get you to switch, which can knock the price
down to $35.40 for the first year. Yes, that is for an entire
year, domain registration included, no other costs at all.

Technical support is, I would say, fair. E-mails are always
answered within a few hours, and phone calls are always
answered, usually within 5 minutes, but sometimes there is
a longer wait. The tech person is in the Philippines, which
means it is sometimes hard for a Texan to understand what
they are saying, but they will stay with you until you
understand. The on-line FAQs are good and the 50-page
booklet they send new customers helps you get started.
