You could refer the student to: http://www.sankey.ws/glazedata.html which is Alish Clausen's database of glazes. It's my understanding that she personally has tried all of them and puts comments underneath each. I found it excellent.

Suggest strongly that he buy "Mastering Cone 6 Glazes," by Ron Roy and John Hesselberth. If he cannot come up with some wonderful glazes using the info in that book he might as well start buying glazes from Laguna.

I could not have made a better recommendation myself!
For a little extra "play" material, have him supplement June's
recommendations with a copy of Chappell' s "The Potter's Complete Book
of Clay and Glazes". He will have enough to keep him busy for years,
just working though it all. Some of my most favorite of all cone 6
glazes are found in those pages

Glazes Cone 6: 1240 C / 2264 F (Ceramics Handbooks) by Michael Bailey would
be as good a choice as the other book.

Marvin,
Tell him to search google. Use the search term "clayart archives". In the
archives are more cone 6 recipes than he will use in this lifetime!
Another suggestion is to have him buy Ron Roy and John Hesselberth's book
"Mastering Cone 6 Glazes" . There aren't many recipes in there; but enough to
get him started and they're all tested for safety, with good firing
instructions as well as more information on glazes which would serve him well.

June

I second the recommendation of MC6 Glazes and going to June Perry's site
http://www.angelfire.com/art2/shambhalapottery/c6glazegroup1.html
(though trying to match her glazes to recipes always gives me a
headache). In addition go to
Alisa Clausen's site
http://www.alisapots.dk/
and Ron Roy / John Hesselberth's sites
http://www.frogpondpottery.com/glazestability/stableglazes.html
and scroll down to the cone 6 glazes. Read the comments on the recipes on
each of them. Some are not recommended as stable and others are. My
favorites (ones used widely and tested as stable) are:
Licorice (glossy black)
Annie's Tan (take out the Rutile and Manganeze for Randy's Red)
Revised Xavier's (really a lovely green)
Frogs Pond Green Matt (a soft earthy green)
Pinnell's Weathered Bronze (amazing when right but not for inside food
dishes)
Floating Blue (NOT GREEN! - I hate the floating green)
Teal Green (for me an almost metalic blue green)
I basically use 'Bone' or 'Satin White' from MC6 for the insides of
functional ware and then have fun with the outside. My glazes from MC6 do
not look a great deal like that shown on their site - I believe my rutile
is significantly different. I'm very fond of what I get however. A ramp
cooling is very important with the MC6 matt glazes and Randy's Red (see
faqframe for firing schedule recommendation - I use 75 degree cool down
where they recommend 125)
http://www.masteringglazes.com/Pages/glazeframe.html
http://www.masteringglazes.com/Pages/Updateframe.html
http://www.masteringglazes.com/Pages/faqframe.html
MC6 Bright Blue is the blue I use from MC6 that is my reliable blue
(floating blue has to be just right to work).
I have other glazes if they want to email me (a yellow, a golden honey, a
clear, and a matt white). For MC6 glazes you will have to buy the book
(not expensive and one I think you should have if you are going to be
mixing up your own glazes).
Hope that wasn't too much of a memory dump. Donna

Dear Marvin ,
There is a wealth of recipes out there. Double collections by Emmanuel =
Cooper and Janet De Boos. The wonderful coloured illustrations in =
"Glazes and Glazing Techniques" by Greg Daly.
But as a teacher this is your heaven sent opportunity to show your =
student how to proceed from First Principles and build a personalised =
collection of glazes. Yes the results may be slow to come, no instant =
satisfaction in this game. But think of the pride you will both share =
when your student displays their creations.
Best regards,
Ivor Lewis.

Here, I have made it very easy, I think, to browse recipes and see a photo
of my own test result. It is like pages from a book, in chapters by color
i.e. white glaze, blue glaze, green glaze, etc.
