itc 100 and 296a (help!)

Hi all,

I am currently discussing the idea of applying ITC 100 and 296A to my
crystalline kiln (that is currently being shipped to me) on William
Melstrom's crystalline forum (found here:
http://www.handspiral.com/ForumGate.htm).

I currently have two gallons of ITC 100 and I was thinking about buying some
ITC 296A, but I just wanted to check to see what everyone thinks about the
products.

I was just looking through my old Ceramics Monthly magazines and I saw in
the November 2000 issue, there was an advertisement for the 2nd annual
artist workshop featuring Mel Jacobson. One of the demonstrations he was
going to go over was ITC. Unfortunately, at that time, I was just a rookie
with this whole clay thing, but now I am looking into using the product on
my own kiln. I've got a Skutt 1227 with zone control and I've heard that
the ITC 100 and 296A help a kiln get up to temperature much faster.

I guess I am just looking for some input on the topic. I've heard some good
things and some bad about it.

P.S. Mel, I am sure you've got plenty to say about it so maybe we could
talk on the phone or something.... :)

2 gallons is WAY more than you need. Spray a thin coat
over everything including elements. You should just
see a slight color change. I have heard horror stories
of people putting it on just a little too thick. Never
had any problems myself. I fire a lot of crystalline
to cone 10 with a four hour hold at 2000F. I have even
reduced in my kiln. It's been 8 months since the last
change. Pretty good for those conditions. I fire that
kiln a couple times a week. I also fire cone 6 and
bisque. Kiln really has not slowed down at all. I
coated my elements first with the stuff for metals.
after installing them I coated the whole job with ITC
100. The kiln is a skutt 1027. I know that Axner sells
kilns with this already done for you.

I love ITC. Feriz (the owner) donated a sample kit to the high school where I teach about a year ago. I put ITC for metals on my new elements and applied ITC 100 to the interior of both the wood kiln and the electric kiln. I've noticed a huge difference in firing time and element life. Just be sure to follow the company's instructions and if you have ?s call them. They are very nice people. I think alot of people that dislike ITC do not apply it correctly and/or have unrealistic expectations. It's a great product not a miracle in a jug.

I've applied to new elements in my Skutt 1227 and found no extended life. It
didn't shorten life either.

Mel who?
Bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha . (ducking from the swinging 2X4)

Nathan...you have more than you need.
Now to complete the loop, you must go back into the archives and do a
search on ITC, where the sender is Mel.
Mel (A.K.A> The Mayor) has posted numerous times on the correct
application of ITC.
Hang on to the extra gallon. You will find it comes in handy, and the
price will never go down.
Best,

i applied itc 100 to the inside of my gas kiln when i built it with no
problems at all, then a little while later a friend gave me an old skutt
1227 that was totally shot that i fixed up and rewired - i applied itc 100
to the brick and that helped restore it, but then i tried dipping the
elements in the stuff for metals and it was just a little too thick, i
guess, and gradually flaked off all over everthing. I only use the kiln
for bisque firings so i didn't care, but if it was for glaze firings it
would have ruined every single pot in every firing - so be careful if you
dip the elements in it. I actually followed the instructions just right,
but i guess i should have watered it down a little more.
