I have an Evenheat kiln at home, two at the schools where I work and an
older model Paragon manual kiln at school too.
Even though I love using the computers on the Evenheat kilns I always
fire with large witness cones.
The problem I had was seeing into the little tiny peephole openings that
were in each kiln.
The holes were too small and you could barely see inside the kiln.
I took a one inch round hole cutter, (the kind you use to cut the
openings for door knobs and locks) and enlarged the peephole opening.
It makes a huge difference in seeing the cones. I wish I would have
done this years ago. I have no idea why Evenheat sends their kilns out
with such tiny little peepholes.
The only thing you have to be careful of is making sure you keep the
drill level so you don't accidentally drill into an element slot.

John,
Every time I fire my Olympic gas kiln
I swear I'm going to drill those peeps
larger!.
Thanks for your words of 'just do it'
I usually just give up trying to see
those darn cones through those narrow
peeps and just wing it towards the end
by temperature, letting it soak a few minutes
at that temperature and then studying
the cones afterwards.
