There is a newly formed pottery co-op in San Antonio, Cayo, Belize. They
received a grant from a rural development agency which provided money for
basic equipment and an instructor who has taught them mold-making. They are
now making and selling good quality tourist-type trinkets but want to expand
and learn how to make planters and other large items.
They received an additional grant, and I helped them to purchase an electric
wheel, slab roller and tools, which arrived last month. They need an
instructor who can be with them every day for 2-3 weeks. I thought it would
be a great opportunity for someone to combine teaching with an adventure.
San Antonio is located about 12 miles (but on a terrible road) from San
Ignacio, a major tourist destination. It is a mostly Maya village but
everyone speaks English. There's lots to see and do nearby, including Maya
ruins, caves, beautiful rivers, waterfalls and jungle. The cayes and reef
are less than 2 hours away. Someone could teach 4 days and explore for 3,
or some other sort of combination of work and play. January, February and
March are the most beautiful months here, weather-wise.
There MAY be some compensation to cover expenses; eg airfare or room and
board. Please contact me if you are interested.
