Good Morning,
I'm planning a clay class for kids aged 7-11 as part of a summer day camp
that's just 1 week long. My problem is trying to figure out if there's a
way to complete a glaze firing by Friday at 3pm if they complete their
projects Monday afternoon. I considered single-firing the pieces, but I'm
not confident the results will be good with kids painting glaze on green
pieces. I don't have alot of experience when it comes to firing schedules.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks so much,
Gina

Gina,
Another option might be to bisque fire the pieces on Wednesday and then
have the kids use some kind of acrylic instead of a fired glaze.
Just an option ....

We sometimes have them paint the wet green pieces with underglaze, then we can clear glaze them without the kids around. You could probably do that in a single fire if you did it carefully. One factor you will have to consider is the thickness of the pieces if you are going to "rush" them.

Gina,
I agree with Jud,
the best way to do this in one week is to
buy Delta Ceramacoat Acrylics and
just have the kids paint them.
Then you can buy Dutch Boy Clear
acrylic spray paint and clear finish them.
The main reason is the kids get what
they see while painting and they like
that.
The only time we use glaze on kids
work is when they make utilitarian
pieces like glasses, bowls or cups.

At our Community Center (prior to KATRINA), we used to do short-term courses
for summer camps and physically challenged children. We used Soldate 60
raku clay and took all pieces directly from the class and sat them on top of a
hot kiln. By the next day they were completely dry and ready to bisque. I
have never had a piece crack or explode in the kiln. The following day we
underglazed and then I would put on clear glaze after the kids left. I fired them
at night and they were cooled by Friday. No unhappy campers.
