Howdy!
I read with great interest Robert Compton's response to income from craft
shows, wholesale.........and I will personally take what this man has to say
as gospel.
Have had the wonderful and most fortunate opportunity to visit his studio,
retail shop the past two years during the Crafts Weekend over Memorial Day,
sponsored by Frog Hollow in Vermont and found him a tremendous source of
inspiration. Was feeling discouraged about pottery and classes....had a fine
arts potter and a production potter guiding me and both were at opposite ends
of the spectrum...didn't like the animosity...which greatly surprised
me.......But a visit to the Compton Pottery changed my perspective....Bob
suggested that I leave classes alone for a while... just go "play with the
clay"....and not to worry about all the rights and wrongs of
things.......starting out....one has to become part of the clay. Came back
to Virginia will much inspiration and did just that....and haven't
stopped....my pieces are given to relatives, etc. right now......not quite
confident to actually "sell" anything, but I know one day I will...and if I
don't??? That's ok to........I'm "playing with the clay and loving every
minute of it!!) :)

Just a clarification: the Crafts Weekend over Memorial Day is called the
Open Studio Weekend and is organized by the Vermont Crafts Council. It's a
great opportunity to visit craft studios and you can find out more about it
by contacting Martha at VT1Crafts@aol.com
