Dear Dick:In your reply to Etsy not being the end of civilization as
we now it you stated some of us have done what we had to do to stay in
business and stay alive. As i think back on my illustrious career I
should be wearing a rubber nose and glasses to admit this. We have
made volleyball trophies, cups for people with big noses, ashtrays in
the shape of hearts, extruded incense burners and business card
holders, ceramic brooches and pins, bolo ties, topiary, lord knows
what else. I found every little gimmick kept us from making better
pots. Putting hundreds of porcelain xmas ornaments around the pots in
the kiln sure improves profitability of the firing but who makes them,
glazes them, loads them, sands them, wraps them in cellophane bags
with a bow and then sells them??? We've never liked what others did
for us so we remain the makers. I guess we feel no one makes it like
we do. It's probably a character flaw that keeps us a mom and pop
operation unable to profit from someone else's labour.
I made some casseroles today- it felt good to make some things that
were familiar to my hands and easy on my head. All the best of the New
Year to all the makers out there.
Tony
